Impact of Traffic Safety Improvements

Principal Investigator(s):

Gary Davis, Professor, Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering

Project summary:

Determining the changes in traffic safety resulting from roadway improvements has always been difficult, although recent work has advanced the state-of-the-art. However, all previous work as assumed that total traffic volume was known with certainty, when in fact they are only estimated with varying degrees of precision. This project will review the state-of-the-art in traffic safety evaluation, determine to what extent uncertainty in traffic volumes can affect estimated accidents, and develop an accident rate estimator appropriate for use when traffic volumes are uncertain.
