Project summary:
The growing trend towards wireless transmission of traffic data places stringent constraints on the transmission of image and video data over low-speed wireless channels, such as CDPT (Cellular Data Packet Transmission). This project explored several interrelated technical and system integration issues related to practical implementation of wireless image/video transmission, using a prototype system housed at the ITS Lab of the Center for Transportation Studies and focusing on two main issues: video compression and quality of service (QoS). After comparing several commercially available compression techniques, the research team recommended a wavelet-based compression technique for video compression, and network prioritization for issues related to quality of service. This project provided practical recommendations regarding image/video transmission over wireless channels with current technology, in settings representative of the future and current needs of Mn/DOT.
