Project summary:
Congestion continues to be a top concern in the Twin Cities and is expected to worsen as travel demand grows with increases in population, housing, and jobs. Choosing improvements or additions to the transportation system, in a manner that makes efficient use of resources and achieves a stated objective (such as reducing traffic congestion), remains a significant challenge for transportation planners.
The purpose of this project was to solve the Twin Cities multimodal network design problem (MNDP) for a variety of scenarios representing different mixes of transit, and determine the effect this would have on road capacity expansion needed to satisfy travelers' expectations, while accounting for user responses. This work builds on previous work by the investigators that solved a roads-only problem.
