A Sensory System for Monitoring Safety in Work Zones

Principal Investigator(s):

Nikos Papanikolopoulos, Professor, Computer Science and Engineering

Project summary:

This proposal suggests techniques for monitoring safety in highway work zones. The technique proposed provide ways of detecting situations that may evolve to accidents by using a vision-based system. In particular, we plan to develop a detection scheme that detects and tracks moving objects in or close to a highway work-zone. By tracking these objects, we will be able to measure vehicle speeds and detect violations of speed limits. In addition, the system will detect the existence of heavy equipment and construction workers close to the highway traffic. The experimental verification of our algorithms will be performed with real images and field data from work-zones at the University of Minnesota.
