Project summary:

Fuel economy display interfaces (FEDI) serve to provide information to drivers regarding the efficiency of their fuel consumption. To date, in-vehicle FEDIs have been visual displays; their net impact on driver safety is not known. However, displays that use other modalities are becoming increasingly possible (for example, haptic). In this project, researchers will examine both the effectiveness of fuel economy displays in reducing fuel consumption and the safety concerns associated with in-vehicle FEDIS. The researchers will then make recommendations for an effective interface that improves efficiency without having any adverse effects on safety. These recommendations could lead to reduced fuel consumption and improved safety.
