North I-35W Corridor Study

Project summary:

Starting out as a conventional transportation study with the primary objective of increasing the capacity and efficiency of the I-35W freeway north of the Twin Cities, this research project evolved into an interdisciplinary effort to establish "livable community" principles for the subregion, and to use those principles to develop a multi-modal transportation plan that addresses all levels of the transportation network. Impetus for the project came from the North I-35W Corridor Coalition, a group of six suburban communities sharing common interests in jobs development, housing, human development, and environmental issues. Researchers worked to probe critical transportation issues such as the relationship between transportation and regional growth patterns, and to identify models for subregional development from other regions.
