Project summary:
The objective of this project is to quantitatively determine why some bridge decks now experience extensive through-deck transverse cracking, and to identify material and/or construction specifications that should be changed to prevent this type of cracking. A field investigation will be conducted on a number of bridges across the State of Minnesota which will include both bridges that experience through transverse cracking and those that do not. The observations will be correlated with construction specifications and plans and specifications, as well as material tests to determine why or why not cracking was observed. The data will be compared with that of the State of Colorado and the NCHRP investigations.
