Project summary:

With emerging 5G, tele-operated autonomous vehicles (AVs)--where a human operator remotely drives an AV--have gained momentum as an alternative for leveraging AVs to tackle societal challenges. Researchers will conduct an experiments-driven and measurement-based feasibility study of AV tele-operations i) to identify the key infrastructure (networking and edge computing) requirements for supporting tele-operated AVs; and ii) to build a semi-virtual simulation environment for studying AV tele-operations. This project builds on the combined expertise of the research team and leverages the unique MnCAV resource at the University of Minnesota's (UMN) Center for Transportation Studies. It will lay the foundation for future funding opportunities and help position UMN as a leader in AV tele-operation research.
