The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has awarded $15 million to the University of Michigan and a team of nine Midwestern research partners—including CTS—to help lead the transition to connected and automated vehicles (CAVs).

The University of Minnesota team will be led by Zhi-Li Zhang, professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and CTS associate director Gina Baas; researchers include Rajesh Rajamani, Raphael Stern, Nikolaos Papanikolopoulos, and Feng Qian. They will leverage the experience of the MnCAV Ecosystem, a collaborative environment for advancing research, engagement, and workforce development to prepare Minnesota and the world for broad-scale CAV development as part of a safe and equitable mobility system.

Michigan’s Center for Connected and Automated Transportation is 1 of 10 regional USDOT University Transportation Centers nationwide. It was granted nearly $16 million in 2016 for applied CAV research and received a five-year extension last month.
